      1. VARIETIES

There has not been found Toquilla Straw cultivations varieties in the zones where the product is sown.

Nevertheless, cultivations of another plant called, "Straw Mocora" exist, which is similar to the previously mentioned but does not meet the requirement for the  manufacture of fine hats of straw toquilla.  When this plant is collected, it produces different classes of leaves, which can be finer or a lot grosser.

For this, the artisans classify the leaves in tops of different classes and sizes.  The finer leaves tops are used for laborious and finer hats and the gross leaves tops for easier to weave and thicker hats.

From time to time, the artisans buy the gross leave tops, and then they comb them themselves making extremely fine fibers to manufacture the so called  "superfine hats".  With the gross leaves tops, innumerable crafts can be manufactured such as bags,  baskets, glasses carriers, animal figures etc.

      1. SEASONS OF CULTIVATION

One of the main advantages the Toquilla Straw cultivation has is the fact that this plant can be cultivated during any time of year.  In the zones of Montecristi, Pacoche, Jipijapa, Pile and San Lorenzo, Toquilla Straw sown fields are found all year long.  This is a plant that does not need a lot of care, only a humid floor is required for it to grow normally.

SURFACE, TOQUILLA STRAW PRODUCTION

The Straw Toquilla takes approximately from 4 to 5 months since sown to grow and be ready to be collected.

      1. STRUCTURE OF PRODUCTION

To understand this point in a better way, we have divided this part of study in:
