2,1. PRODUCTION
- ZONES OF CULTIVATION
The Straw Toquilla, Carludovica palmata R. & P., locally known as rampira is a plant that grows in altered tropical zones, it is utilized for various ethnic groups in the east and in the West Ecuadorian.
The Iraca (Carludovica palmata, family of the ciclantáceas, order of the sinantas), also known by the common names of straw hat, Straw toquilla, Lucaina, Lucua, Palmiche, Basket, Nacuma, Rabihorcado, Murrapo, Alagua, is a native plant of the American continent, that is cultivated in temperate zones. Nevertheless the main zones where this product is cultivated are located in the province of Manabí; in the Zones of Pile, Montecristi, Jipijapa and San Lorenzo.
The Straw Toquilla needs to be cultivated in humid floors, and places as these are favorable for the case. The Straw Toquilla cannot be
cultivated in dry floors, because although it can grow with abundant irrigations and guarantees the quality of the final product, it would not be the same as the one cultivated in humid soils.
There are also sown fields in the provinces of Esmeraldas and Guayas and sporadic zones of cultivation in the province of Morona Santiago, but they are not as prominent as in the case of the province of Manabí.

SURFACE, PRODUCTION AND PERFORMANCE
The Toquilla Straw cultivations are not normally monitored, low Toquilla Straw production indices exist in Guayas and Manabí (respectively 1.152 hectares and 74 hectares harvested). It is calculated that the surface sown of Straw Toquilla in the province of Manabí is of about 75 hectares and The Rivers of 8 hectareas approximately, making Manabí the point of distribution of this product for the provinces engaged in the mafacture of hats and Toquilla Straw crafts. The merchants who are engaged in the sale and purchase of the Straw Toquilla (without processing) are called "Pajeros". They buy the product from the cultivators. Then the Straw Toquilla is sold in bunches called "tops". Each toquilla Straw plant can produce approximately from 15 to 20 tops.
