STRAW HATS WHOLESALE & PANAMA HATS MANUFACTURE
The raw matter, with which the craftsmen elaborate the hats of Montecristi and crafts of River basin, comes from the enclosures Barcelona and Sinchal, in the Peninsula of Santa Elena.
In these peninsular sectors, 90 families dedicate good part of the day to prepare the straw toquilla that soon will be sold to industries and companies of Montecristi and Cuenca as well as River basin for the artisan works.
Maria Villegas Panchana and Holland Pezo have been working in the drying of the straw toquilla for 40 years. Their spouses are in charge of bringing the raw material that exists in abundance in the Chongón-Colonche mountain range, to few kilometers of those populations. Their work consists in cutting, selecting, cooking the great straw in pailas, drying them in cords and desvenar them in lengths and fine filaments. By this work each one of them gains $1 by the five straw packages, each one with eight straw branches
However Saturnine Pozo and Edelina Tomalá elaborate rugs and parasols with the straw toquilla finished. It gains an average of $3 when the sale is made in the artisan fairs that organize the week ends in the Montañita parish.
Lamentably, they do not know the “technique” of how elaborating the fine hats that are sold in some countries of America and Europe. The comuneros of Barcelona and Sinchal have the hope to learn this mechanism of preparation, thanks to the support of several organizations. The Canadian Ecuadorian Bottom, Natura Foundation, Foundation Pro Town and Program of Handling of Recursos Costeros (PMRC) enable comuneros and help them improve its conditions of life.
The crafts with straw toquilla are not the unique ones. The comuneros of the peninsula of Santa Elena show their creations in tagua, wicker, snails, gold, silver, kills, cardboard, wood and shells.
(AM) Obras – The Manglaralto parish is the “capital” of 15 communes located in the costanero profile of Santa Elena, in where they inhabit tens of craftsmen.
- 90% of the population are dedicated to work works of crafts.
- The craftsmen take advantage of the fair on Saturdays and Sundays to sell their works to the tourists.
